IT IS ADVISABLE?
Teeth whitening is an aesthetic treatment. It is not a health treatment. So it will be recommended or not depending on how important it is for us to improve the color of our teeth.
WHAT DOES IT CONSIST OF?
When it comes to whitening teeth, you have to distinguish between stains and stains. The spots are external and have a wide variety of causes. Coffee, tobacco, food coloring, chromogenic bacteria, etc. In many cases, they are easily removed with a simple cleaning at the dental clinic. Hygienists will also provide hygiene information to delay the appearance of stains as much as possible. Stains are internal. In most cases, it is simply the color of the tooth itself, which is very dark and we do not like it. The teeth are not white, they have color, and this color changes from one person to another, like the color of the hair or the eyes. Others are internal stains with extrinsic causes. Tetracycline stains, bleeding inside the tooth due to trauma, infection, root canals, etc. It is the dentist who must assess the most correct technique to follow in each case and the expectations of success, and decide together with the patient the convenience of the treatment.
WHAT IS EXTERNAL WHITENING?
The external bleaching involves the application of a whitening product of intensive action, Hydrogen Peroxide, on the surface of teeth which we treat. Many times we use an accelerator for the action of the bleach, such as light, heat, etc. This is done in the Dental Clinic, because it requires vigilance and protection of the oral tissues. Subsequently, another product, of progressive action, is applied on an outpatient basis, Carbamide Peroxide, which the patient applies once a day in his own home for one or two weeks. To do this, we make a splint that allows the whitener to be applied to the tooth. Keep in mind that fillings and porcelains are not bleached. If they exist previously, they should be changed later to avoid color discrepancy. If we want to make fillings or place porcelain in the mouth, it is advisable to wait until the whitening has finished.
IS EXTERNAL WHITENING HARMFUL?
In principle, no, if it is performed by professional dentists who protect the soft tissues and control the entire process. The use of whitening substances with sufficient concentration to be effective is restricted to dentists. Whitening toothpastes have a very low concentration of bleach. In some cases, the whitening phase in the clinic produces some minor discomfort and sometimes the teeth are sensitive to cold for some time. In very rare cases, the bleach begins to cause discomfort from the first moment, in which case we do not continue with the process. Obviously, external whitening is discouraged in people with dentin hypersensitivity.
WHAT IS INTERNAL WHITENING?
The internal bleaching is performed whitening teeth with very intense dyeings, due to chemical or pharmaceutical for example tetracyclines, trauma with spills inside the tooth, some endodontics, etc. It is carried out inside the tooth, and therefore requires the existence of a previous endodontics. Its results are much more predictable.
